Ultimate Lighting Technology

MYK set out with a goal to make the best possible light for enduro and adventure bikes.  That means we have used the best possible, zero compromise materials every step of the way.

TIR LENSES

Carclo Optics is  UK company and one of the world leaders in optics for LED lights.  They are a recommended solution provider for the two premium LED makers in the world, Cree and Lumileds (Philips).  Carclo make TIR (Total Internal Reflection) optical lenses for LEDs.  And they supply MYK with our LED optics.  TIR lenses were initially developed around a decade ago and begain to gain significant popularity with premium product makers 5-6 years ago, due to the superior beam shaping afforded by the lenses and the more efficient redirection of the light emitted by the LED emitter (light chip).  Specialised light manufacturers (such a product display lighting, architectural illumination etc) have moved to TIRs over simple reflectors due to the superior light control and greater light output.

As the diagram above shows, LEDs with lenses waste less light and that means more light is being where you effectively need it, rather than scattered  in an uncontrolled pattern.  One of the drivers behind us developing our own lights was the non-existance of the superior TIR lenses in the motorcycle lighting space.

Further information on the effectiveness of TIR lenses is detailed in this study:

https://www.ledsmagazine.com/leds-ssl-design/modular-drivers/article/16695469/tir-optics-enhance-the-illuminance-on-target-for-directional-led-modules-magazine

In that study, LEDs Magazine noted:

"Reflectors are common with omnidirectional lights such as incandescents, but in LED designs they carry a key disadvantage: a majority of light rays originating from the center of the emitter pass out of the system without ever touching the reflector. This means that even in a narrow-flood reflective system, where the view angle is in the 20-25° range, a significant portion of the light strays wide of the target. And it isn’t simply lost; worse, it is very visible as glare and background light, causing distraction and discomfort at the expense of center-beam lux.

Contrast this with the optical opportunities for a compact, very high lumen-density emitter. These emitters are powerful enough to provide the necessary luminous intensity (measured in lumens) and small enough to be enveloped with a TIR lens to guide virtually all of the radiated light toward the target. An inexpensive, efficient, well-designed lens in a low-profile form factor is only possible with such very bright, very compact emitters."

And when actually measuring how much stray light there was from reflectors vs lenses, they found this:

"28% of the radiated energy from the reflector design falls outside of [the intended] cone, contributing to glare, while for the TIR design this is only 6%."

That means if your LED light is reflector based, you can consider around 30% of that light as wasted and ineffective, vs 6% for the lens design. So for lights with identical quoted luminous output, the TIR Lens light is putting more than 20% more light onto the road where you need it.

LED EMITTERS

MYK use only the best, industry leading LED chips from Cree, for decades the industry leader.  Currently we use the 10w XP-L2 (these are a higher performance version of the more commonly used, and lower output 10w XM-L2) emitters from Cree.

Details on the Cree XP-L2 emitters can be found here:
CREE XP-L2 (Xtra Performance) Series LEDs

EXTREME WEATHER PROTECTION

The headlight complies with IP69K, i.e. highest rating of protection against water and dust.  For what that actually means see here:  Guide to the IP Rating System

BUILT-IN ELECTRICAL PROTECTION

Overheating protection.  High voltage protection.

LOW WEIGHT

MYK lights are designed to be lightest lights on the market and to produce the highest amount of lumens per gram
  • 4 LED “Mayak” headlight weighs only 250 grams (8.8oz).
  • 2 LED “Sova” headlight weighs only 90 grams (3.4 oz).

HIGH STRENGTH

MYK lights are designed by enduro riders.  They are designed to be tough.  They are used off road every day.  They have been dunked into swamps, crashed into trees, vibrated on corrugated roads for weeks on end.  The milled alloy body and toughened polycarbonate lenses make the Mayak headlamp extemely durable, crashproof and invulnerable even to direct impacts.

These lights are not designed and made in a factory in Asia where the people who design or put together or sell the lights have no real understanding of how good or how tough they need to be to excel in their day to day function.  We know these lights do the job for off road riders, because we use them for that everyday, first hand.
